Mighty Sports-Philippines import and former LA Lakers star Lamar Odom has landed in Manila today just in time for their first official team practice.
Odom was first met by player agent Sheryl Reyes before being mobbed by Filipino fans who had been anticipating his arrival.
The former LA Lakers star forward will beef up the Mighty Sports-Philippines team, alongside fellow imports Justin Brownlee and Randolph Morris, as they are set to go toe-to-toe against the toughest Middle Eastern basketball clubs in the annual tournament.
Rounding out the team are up-and-coming Fil-Ams Jeremiah Gray, Roosevelt Adams, former PBA star Joseph Yeo, Gab Banal, UP playmaker Juan Gomez de Liaño, La Salle’s Santi Santillan, College of St Benilde’s Justin Gutang and National University’s Troy Rike.
“We are excited to see him and how he gels with the entire team. We most definitely will be practicing almost everyday so I’m expecting all of our players to have enough fuel in the tank,” team owner Alexander Wongchuking noted.
The back-to-back NBA champion made headlines two years ago after a tumultuous period in his personal life but has since turned around working back into competitive shape based on his Instagram posts.
He also made it clear that this stint marks his re-entry into professional basketball as he plans to join the BIG3, a 3-on-3 basketball league by rapper Ice Cube that showcases former NBA talents.
This is Mighty Sports’ second stint in the Dubai tournament after bowing out in the early round with only one tick in the win column.
“This is redemption for our forgettable finish two years ago. Hopefully, we bag the crown this time with Odom’s help,” Wongchuking said.
