Charles Tiu showed off his range in the opening period as Mighty Sports-Prudential Guarantee won its fourth straight Cortina Conference Division 1 title in the Xavier School Alumni Basketball League via an 83-72 victory over Embassy Whisky yesterday at Xavier’s Cortina Gym.
The former Mighty Sports mentor and current CNN sports analyst outscored their opponent in the first quarter by scoring 27 of Mighty Sports’ 30 points as he hit a hot seven triples during the first seven minutes of action.
His hot hands set the pace the entire game to derail the Embassy Whisky squad’s composure making them struggle to keep up against the Caesar Wongchuking-managed Mighty Sports-Prudential Guarantee boys in the yearly alumni competition.
Mighty head coach Mike Fermin said the team played well but Charles early performance got everybody going.
The Go for Gold-backed Mighty Sports-Prudential Guarantee posted another glorious finish to the year as it remains undefeated in the tournament.
Tiu finished with 34 points and emerged as the Finals MVP distinction. TY Tang and Joseph Yeo added 18 and 15 points, respectively, with the latter serving eight assists.
Also backing the perennial champions are Den Coyiuto (Prudential Guarantee) and Willy Ocier (Go for Gold).
